Question by guineapig_gal:):

Co-ed or single sex school?

Hi there, I really need help about whether to go to a single sex or co-ed school. Im a girl in grade 10 and we are moving across the country and so obviously I have to choose a new school... There are basically 2 we are looking at, one is co-ed and one is all-girls. I have been to an all-girls school my whole life and I know it may sound weird but I don't really know any boys because I hate going out because I have epilepsy which is triggered by crowds and really loud noises or music etc (but I am trying my best to get over that). Anyway, I want to go to the co-ed school because it has a reputation of having more 'different' students, and I can relate to that (I don't have many friends at school but we all aren't your run of the mill kind of kid, which is why we aren't really a big group). Anyway, I am worried about co-ed because I have NO idea how to be around guys. But then again, it would be nice to have some guy-friends and kind of get some more social skills. The co-ed school doesn't do so well academically.
The single-sex has really good academics but I don't want to be in the same situation, just on the other side of the country and without friends that I have spent ages building relationships with. The school seems like a replica of my current school, just with a different name. I am academically strong and my sister got really good results for her finals so I don't really want to be the sister who did badly and be overshadowed by all of her achievements. Right now I am just so confused and I would love some help. Has anyone else been in the same situation?
thanks for help:) Obviously I'm not going to be slacking off, working as hard (or harder) than I do now. You never do know if it's the teachers or the students, though there were students that got the kind of marks & achievements I want to get, so it is possible and probably not the school that caused lower academic achievement... Thanks so much, this has really helped:)

First of all.
I like co-ed schools. You're right, you can expand on your social skills - the chances of you working with only females in your future career is about .. 0%.
Now about your academic point. People have turned out successful even from low trash schools. If both of the schools are around the same level, one is slightly better than the other. Then you can't blame the school if you get bad grades. The opportunity is presented to every student, it's how you can turn it around to your benefit (unless of course the difference between the schools are staggering)
